Active and Passive Voice


We can wright or speak  our sentences in tow ways Active voice  and Passive voice
There are some rules to change active to passive and passive to active  -ike
In Active voice we say  ? I write a latter.
In passive we can say  ? A latter is written by me.
    Rules ? Hear are some easy rules that will help you in doing practice of Active & passive

    • You can Interchange between subject and object Rules !
    (1)    - The first rule to change active into passive is to use the  subject at the place of object, and object is used at the place of subject
    and mostly ?by? comes before the subject,
    in some sentences "by" is mostly hidden.

    Example ?
    • Active - My mother loves me.
    • Passive ? I am loved by my mother.
    (2)When we change Active in to passive article, adjective, adjective phrase they wont Chang there subject they will come with there own subject and objects.
    • Active ? She got punishment from her teacher.
    • Passive ? She was given punishment by her teacher.
    Change of Pronouns ? When we use objective pronouns as a subject we have to change the pronoun forms. like
    •  Me ?I
    • Us - we
    • Him ? he,
    • Her ? she ,
    • Them ? they
    There is no change in "you" or "it" or noun

    Some Example of changing the pronouns.
    • Active ? She loves Bella.
    • Passive ? Bella is loved by her.
    • Active ? I hate him.
    • Passive ? He was hated by me.
    • Active ? God bless us.
    • Passive ? We all blessed by god.
    • Active ? I see a movie.
    • Passive ? A movie is seen by me.
    Change in verb ( Tense)
    Changed verb will be always in past participle (third form)
    Verb ?to be ?is used (IS , are , am , was, were, be, been , being)

    Example
    Present tense


    Present Indefinite tense
    Rule ? We always use is, are, am before the third form of verb
    • Active -He reads a book.
    • Passive ? book is read by him.
    • Active ? he brings books.
    • Passive -- books are brought by him.
    Present  Continues Tense 
    Rule ? in present continues tense ...
    is being,are being,am being ..are used before the third form of the verb
    • Active - He is doing dance.
    • Passive ? the dance is being done by him.
    • Active ? they are praising you.
    • Passive ? You are being praised by them.
    • Active ? He is suggesting me.
    • Passive ? I am being suggested by him.
    Present Perfect tense
    Rule ? has / have +been + third form of the verb
    • Active ? He has done his work.
    • Passive ? His work has been done by him.
    • Active- They have seen my home.
    • Passive ? My home has been seen by them.
    • Active ? he has suggested me.
    • Passive- I has been suggested by them.
    Past tense (past indefinite tense)
    Rule ? was/were + thirds form of verb
    • Active ? He wrote a mail.
    • Passive ? A mail was written by him.
    • Active ? I saw him.
    • Passive ? He was seen by me.
    • Active ? he suggested me.
    • Passive ? I was suggested by him.
    Past Continues Tense
    Rule ?was / were + being + third form of the verb
    • Active ? He was writing a later.
    • Passive ? The latter was being written by him.
    • Active- She was eating sweet.
    • Passive ? Sweet was being eaten by her.
    • Active ? they were praising you.
    • Passive ? you were being praise by them.
    Past perfect Tense
    Rule ? Had+been+third form of the verb
    • Active - He had written a latter.
    • Passive ? A latter had been written by him.
    • Active ? Ram had read my mail.
    • Passive ? a mail had been read by ram.
    • Active ? She had helped me.
    • Passive ? I had been helped by him.
    Note (there is no passive voice of past perfect continues tense)
    Future Tense
    Rule ? will / shall + be + third form of verb
    • Active ? He will write a letter.
    • Passive ? A latter will be written by him.
    • Active ? They will show you.
    • Passive ? you will shown by them.
    • Active ? They will invite me.
    • Passive ? I will be invited .
    Future Perfect tense
    Rule Will / shall = have been + third form of verb
    • Active ? She will have written a latter.
    • Passive ? A latter will have been written by her.
    • Active- They will have showed you.
    • Passive ? You will have been showed by them.
    • Active ? they will have invited me.
    • Passive ? I will have been invited by them.
    Note ? there never be  passive sentence of present prefect continues, Past perfect continue,& future Continues, or future perfect continues.


    Some more rule to change active in to passive 

    "Be" + third form with following verbs
      Can / could / may / might / should / would
    • Active ? They can suggest you,
    • Passive ? you can be suggest by them.
    • Active ? She should remove this mail.
    • Passive ? This mail should be removed by her.
    (2)  Some verbs are used with verb ?to? in passive voice, these verbs come with "to be" + third form of verb
    • Active - I am to help him.
    • Passive ? He is to be helped by me.
    • Active ? She has to help me.
    • Passive ? I have to be helped by her.
    • Active ? she to bring here.
    • Passive ? you were to be brought here by her.
    (3)  We can change transitive verbs in passive,
    but notice preposition will always come with verb
    • Active ? She looks after him.
    • Passive ? he is looked after by him.
    • Active ? She laughed at him.
    • Passive ? He was laughed at by her.
    (4)  Direct and indirect also can be changed in passive voice
    Example ?
    • Active ? She teaches me dance.
    • Passive ? I am taught dance by her.
    • Active ? They gave you a pen.
    • Passive ? you were given a pen by them.
    (5)  Sentence that starts with ?let?...will come with ?be? + thirds form
    • Active - Let him bring a glass of water.
    • Passive ? let a glass of water be brought by him.
    (6)  Imperatives Sentence in passive voice
    If imperative are about to ?order? or ?command? then these sentence with start ?let? or ?be? before third form of verb
    Example
    • Active ? bring the glass.
    • Passive ? let the glass be brought.
    • Active ? Shut the door.
    • Passive ? let the door be shut.
    • Active ? Show he papers.
    • Passive ? let the paper be shown.
    If imperative sentence with request or advice in passive voice, use  third form after ?should be? these sentence never start with "let"
    • Active ? Help the poor.
    • Passive - The poor should be helped.
    • Active ? feed the child.
    • Passive ? the child should be fed.
    • Active ? Love your parents.
    • Passive ? You parents should be loved.
    If the imperative sentence are in negative, then remove "do" and use "let not".
    • Active ? do not read my mail.
    • Passive ? Let not my mail be read.
    • Active ? do not beat the child.
    • Passive- Let not the child be beaten.
    • Active ? do not defend the thief.
    • Passive ? thief should not be defended.

    (7)  Negative Sentence in to passive voice
    • Active ? The boy did not help me.
    • Passive ? I was not helped by the boy.
    • Active ? She was not moving the chair.
    • Passive ? The chair was not being moving by her.
    • Active ? She cannot dance.
    • Passive ? Dance cannot be done by her.

    (8)   Interrogative in to passive voice 
    If the interrogative sentence starts with helping verbs (do, does, did, was, were, has, have, had is, are, am )
    passive voice sentence will also start with helping verb but verbs are changed according to subject in passive voice
    Example
    • Active ? Does he help you?
    • Passive ? is he helped by him?
    • Active ? has he slapped him?
    • Passive ? Has he been slapped by him?
    • Active ? Who has seen you?
    • Passive ? By whom you have been seen?
    • Active ?What pleased you so much?
    • Passive ?With what were you pleased so much?
