Always take the weather (forecast) with you!

I often feel I do things in class that might be worth blogging about but never get round to it. So, while I've got a moment?

We don't have IWBs at our school and we don't think we need them. The main reason for this is the feeling that the expense of one does not offer enough value when compared to the cheaper 'projector-only' option. I use the projector a lot and just having the option to display webpages is extremely useful and it can offer a lot to a materials light classroom.

Old skool BBC weather forecast!

Yesterday, I was discussing the Easter holiday with a couple of low level teenagers I teach. We ended up getting on to the subject of the weather, which was distinctly changeable round here over the holidays and so there was a lot of weather to talk about. It turned out that they hardly remembered/ knew any weather vocabulary, so we brainstormed some stuff and I wrote it on the board. Then we used it to talk about that day's weather as well as some days during the holidays.

Rather than leaving it there, however, I decided to elicit some cities around the world. We listed five and I projected the BBC weather page onto the board. I asked the students to predict what the weather was like in those cities, one by one. As far as I know, weather symbols are pretty international and they can be easily understood, offering instant flashcards, of a kind. As well as practising the language, I learnt that their geographical knowledge was quite limited! On the BBC site you can also see the five day forecast, so we could talk about the changing weather on various days.

This, I think, was a nice idea. However?

...what also occurred was something I must admit to being guilty of more often than I'd like. It is something I feel anyone using an unplugged approach needs to remember and get into a habit of including in their lessons. My students ended up leaving with no written record of the vocabulary. I will do something tomorrow to consolidate, but on Tuesday they could have drawn a mind-map in their notebooks or they could have made their own flashcards, amongst many other possibilities (please pass on any ideas!). Their homework could have been to look over the lexis. I think that they really should have had something to take away with them, even just a wordlist with translations. I did take a photo of the board myself, so I have a record. I could have printed that out for them, if I was using a class blog I would have posted it.

I'll be making up for it tomorrow, but in the meantime, I regret a missed opportunity, but I know I have an area I can focus on in terms of personal development!
