Grammar Tools

Language is the first and fore most thing that is needed to a rational being. To learn language or to use language we need grammar. There are so many languages in the world. Languages differ from nation to nation due to geographical distances and for the same reason different languages are emerged.

And every language has to abide by a collection of some systematic rules accepted by all the people who use that language. The total collection of the rules of any language is called grammar of the respective language.

So grammar is a vital factor to every language. No language without following any grammar can convey any sense. Of course I like to mention any formal language.

From that point of view I believe English is based on a suitable grammar of which every rule is logically established. There are so many elements of English Grammar and each of them follows logical reasoning.

We can mention the important elements of English Grammar as: Parts of Speech, Tenses, Voice, Kinds of Sentences, Transformation, Narration, Case, Number, Gender, Comparison of Degree, Forms of Verb, etc. I think among them Parts of Speech and Forms of Verb are basically and logically important.

English is an easy learning language too. If any one wants to learn English, he can easily do that. But he has to try and follow the rules of grammar logically. And only then he will feel that English is very easy to learn. He will also be amazed to some extent.

Everything what we want to make needs tool, so does a Sentence in any language. In English we need words to make a Sentence and at the same time we need to know the character of the words to use them in a Sentence properly and ?Parts of Speech? deals with the character of the words. That?s why we need to have a clear concept about Parts of Speech.

Words play a variety of roles in a sentence. Except Preposition, Conjunction and Interjection all of the words often change their forms according to the demand of the sentence. We know a sentence is nothing but a sum total of words arranged in a systematic way that conveys a complete sense to the audience. So the sense is also varies in billions of ways and so do the sentences. Consequently, the words also possess a great variety.

Knowing the variety of words a learner should know how to arrange the words in a Sentence according their functions and their variety of characters.

A learner must know the technology of making a Sentence. To have an authority over the technology one has to know well about the tools of language. For that purpose one has to study Parts of Speech and other elements of English Grammar well and logically. I think the main and important elements are Noun and Pronoun, Adjective, Verb, Adverb, Classification of Verb and Noun, Forms of Verb, Tense, Voice, Case,  Comparison of Adjective and Adverb, Articles, Syntax, different Kinds of Sentence and Transformation of Sentences, etc.

To use words we have to have a concept of Suffix and Prefix. They are the tools of mainly changing of words. We can see the difference between the words ?drive? and ?driver?. ?Drive? is used as a Verb or, maybe, also as a Noun changing its meaning. When we add simply an ?r? to the word ?drive? to turn it into ?driver? it becomes a Noun giving different meaning.

Only bare an ?r? bears no meaning but when it is added to the word ?drive?, it is capable of changing the meaning and the use of the word ?drive? and in that case ?r? is called a Suffix.

In this way we often have to add a letter or letters that actually bear no meaning individually but reform a word to be used differently. The letter or letters are called Suffix when they are added after the word but when they are added before the word, are called Prefix. Such as:

Verb       +      er         =Noun                        Adjective        +          ly         = Adverb
Teach      +      er         =Teacher                     Slow                +          ly         = Slowly
Play         +      er         =Player                       Final                +          ly         = Finally

In the examples, ?er? and ?ly? are Suffix. They have no meaning but they are capable of reforming the other words to be used differently, being added after the words.

Again,
En        +          Noun   = Verb              Dis       +          Word   = Opposite Word
En        +          Chant  = Enchant           Dis       +          Allow  = Disallow
En        +          Courage =Encourage     Dis       +          Agree  = Disagree

In the examples, ?en? and ?dis? are Prefix. They have no meaning but they are capable of reforming the other words to be used differently, being added before the words.

So Suffix and Prefix are the tools of English Grammar. To learn English well one has to know well about such Language Tools.

We can see the uses of the root word ?Courage?. We use the word as a Noun.
He has no courage to do the work. In the Sentence ?courage? is a Noun.
He encouraged me to do the work. Here, ?encouraged? is a Verb.

The root word ?courage? is reformed by adding a Prefix ?en? before it to make it a Verb and a Suffix ?ed? to make the Verb ?encourage? to form a Past form. So ?en? and ?ed? are Prefix and Suffix respectively.

He is a courageous person. Here, ?ous? is added to the Noun ?courage? to make it an Adjective. So ?ous? is a Suffix.

He did the work courageously. Here ?ly? is added to the Adjective ?courageous? to make it an Adverb. So ?ly? is also a Suffix.

We can use the word ?courage? in four different ways to serve the purpose of four words. So if we can use the tools of Suffix and Prefix properly our Vocabulary Strength must be increased. If we know one thousand words, Suffix and Prefix will increase our Vocabulary Strength up to four thousand. So Suffix and Prefix are very important tool for Vocabulary or Words Power.

In English so many Suffix and Prefix are used to reform the words. They are like able/ible, al, ance, be, dis, ee, er, en, ful, ian, ic, il/in/im/ir, ing, s/es, ish, less, ly, ment, ness, ous, pre, ship, sion/tion, un, y/ey, etc.

I think we have already learnt Formation of Sentences and the character of words i.e. Parts of Speech. We must now know how to use the tools of Suffix and Prefix well to reform the words properly according to the demand of the Sentence.

Here I like to proceed with the grammatical elements one by one. The learners may follow my discussion. They can also follow my other sites too.

Thanks to all.
