NOUNS



Let's start our lesson with Nouns. Nouns are words for people, animals, things, and ideas"
But, Thomson and Martinet (1986:24) state that "there are four kinds of noun in English, such as:
1. Common nouns, e.g : dog, man, table
2. Proper nouns e.g : France, Jakarta, Bolivia, Mr. Galih, Udin
3. Abstract nouns, e.g : beauty, madness, courage, fear, justice
4. Collective nouns, e.g : team, flock, swarm, group, club




 


Exercise 1
Now find out five more example of each nouns, and write your answer below (in comment)

A. Singular and Plural Nouns

Dignen (1996:6) states that "nouns can be singular or plural. Singular means one and plural means more than one." Usually, the ending -s or -es will be added to form plural nouns.

The example if singular nouns are:
1. She is a student.
2. Jakarta is a city.
3. a moth is an insect.

a and an are called as articles which are located in front of singular nouns. Article "a" will be followed by words which begin with consonants (such as a paper and a laptop) and article "an" will be followed by words which begin with vowels (such as an insect and an elephant)

Exercise 2
Use the article a or an in each sentences below:
1. English is ... language
2. A butterfly is ... animal
3. Asia is ... continent
4. Los Angeles is ... city
5. The bus arrived ... hour ago

The example of plural nouns are:
Days, cats, houses, boxes, pens, donkeys, flies, hotels, rooms, kisses, women, countries, tables and so on.
