Child Language Development

Languages are the ideal media in communication. Do you remember the process how could you communicate with people at the first time? Here I am going to tell you about child language development. The first time children learn languages trough hearing the other people?s voices. Beside Boch?s theory of child language development, the other relevant theory includes Piaget?s theory of cognitive development, which considers the development of language as a continuation of general cognitive development. According to Boch, there are 4 steps in child language development. The first step is called reflexive vocalization. This step happens in age 0-3 months. Children usually respond to the voices they hear in this age. They give several different responses to express their rejoinder. For examples they will cry when they feel afraid of somebody, they will laugh when they feel happy. They also can express what they feel by use a body language such as hitting somebody, turning their head, blink their eyes, etcetera. The second step is called babbling. This step happens in the age 3-6 months. In this age they are able to pronounce babble, such as: mama; papa; lala; baba etcetera. Besides, they start to give responds when somebody calls their names. The third step happens in age 6-24 months. This step name is echolalia. In this step, children usually imitate somebody?s speech. They start to use one or more words with meaning to communicate. Besides, they also can understand simple instructions especially if vocal or physical cues are given. They are aware of the social value of speech. Entering the age of 18 months, children can name a number of objects common to their surroundings. They know chief parts of body and should be able to indicate them if they are not name. The fourth step is called true speech, this step happens after 3 years old. In 3-6 years old, they can speak more sentences with true meaning. They know names of some familiar animals, colors, they also know common opposites such as bigÛ little, longÛshort, hotÛcool etcetera. They should be able to follow three commands given without interruptions, and should have little time concepts such as: morning, afternoon, night, tomorrow, yesterday, and today. In 7-8 years old, children can carry on conversation at rather adult level. In other words, child language development is a variation of children?s ability in languages. It grows together with their age. Therefore, you should know about child language development so you can easily teach or just communicate with them.
