How Can Swimming Teach You Past Simple & Past Continuous?

TABLES

Past Continuous: was/were + verb + ing
Positive form
Negative form
Question form
We were swimming at around 11:00 am.

I was moving ahead under the water.
We weren?t swimming at around 11:00 am?

I wasn?t moving ahead under the water?

Were we were swimming at around 11:00 am?

Was I was moving ahead under the water?

All above actions were happening at one specific time in the past. For example, we were swimming at around 11:00 am

It is very easy to change Past Continuous sentences into a negative form.

Just add not or n?t - short form of not - to your verb to be (was/were) and that?s all.

Changing Past Continuous sentences into a question form is also very easy.

Just move your verb to be (was/were) to the front of your sentence.

In other words, put the verbs to be before your subjects and you are done.

Past Simple

Positive form
Negative form
Question form
One of the days we had a quick lunch and cleaned our camp area.

After that we changed our clothes and went to swimming pool.

We did not have a quick lunch and cleaned our camp area.

After that we didn?t change our clothes and didn?t go to swimming pool.

Did we have a quick lunch and clean our camp area on one of the days?

Did we change our clothes and go to swimming pool after that?

All above examples illustrate finished actions.

They all happened in the past and we know when exactly they happened.

Pay attention! When we use didn?t to make a negative form, we never add ?ed to our verbs.

Changing Past Simple sentences into a question form is also very easy but that every Past Simple sentence has the helping verb did inside which you don?t see.

For example, when you say ?I went to school yesterday? you can?t see did here but you should remember there is did.

So when changing it into a question form you should say ?Did I go school yesterday??

Notice that you verb changes from past form (went) into present form (go) because of did.

Past Simple & Past Continuous: together

Past Simple or Past Continuous?

We had a quick lunch and cleaned our camp area.

We were swimming at around 11:00 am.

Use Past Simple for completed/finished actions.

Use Past Continuous for action in progress.

Past Simple clashing with Past Continuous

While I was standing and watching how my team leader was shouting for a help, a boy came behind me and pushed me into the water.

I was thinking about something else when he did this to me.

In both examples above you can see that Past Simple verbs like came, pushed and did are clashing with Past Continuous verbs like standing, watching, shouting and thinking.

This is how you can use Past Simple and Past Continuous together in one sentence.
