Some Important changes of Direct to indirect


Changes In question tags

There are two way to change question tag direct to indirect
  • Direct: He said, ?You are good sportsman, ?aren't you??
  • Indirect: He asked whether I was a good sportsman.
  • Direct: He said, ?Jiya has secured first division, ?hasn't she?
  • Indirect: I asked whether Jiya had secured first division.

Imperative question tags 

  • Direct: Mother, ?said to me bring a glass of water, will you??
  • Indirect: Mother requested me to bring her a glass of water
  • Direct: He said go away from here, ?will you??
  • Indirect: He asked me to go away from there.

?Reported verb? is changed in told, asked, requested and principal verb of ?reported speech? is changed into infinitive (to + verb )

?Let? express the sense of imagination, proposal, condition etc..to change this direct to indirect reporting verb is changed according to sense ,

?let? is removed and conjunction  ?that? is placed .

Some typical rules to change ?let? direct to indirect 

Let: Order 

When there is a sense of ?order?, words like ordered, asked directed are used in the place of reporting verb and ?should? in the place of ?let? like
  • Direct: the principal said ?let no student stand here.?
  • Indirect: the principal ordered that no student should stand here.?

 Let: Proposal 

When there is sense of ?proposal?
Reporting verb is change in to ?proposed? or ?suggested?
?Should? in to? Let?
or connective ?that? is used
Objective case after ?let? is change in to nominative case
like
  • Direct : The boy said, ? let me go out to play.?
  • Indirect: the boy wished that he should go out to play.
  • Direct: the man said, ?Let me have the first choice.?
  • Indirect: the man wished that he should have the first choice. 

Some other kind of changes in direct to indirect 

When stanza starts, some words are added ,like 
he continued,he further said,continuing he said,he also said . etc?

(2) : When exclamatory sentence is change in to simple sentence,for that subject is used before the verb. like
  •  Direct : He asked , ?where you going" ?
  • Indirect: He asked where he was going.
  • Direct: he said, ?Hurrah! We have won the match.
  • Indirect: He exclaimed joyfully that they had won the match.
  • Direct: He said ?Alse! He is dead.? 
  • indirect: He mournfully exclaimed that he was dead.

In exclamatory sentence ?alsh? ?hurrah? or ?bravo? are changed in to sorrowfully, joyfully, cheerfully ,surprisingly, or mournfully

(3) : When there is a words n reported speech like ?your majesty,your honour,kindly. the sense of these words is used ?like
He said politely, humbly, respectfully, gently, reverently,

  • Direct: The student said to the teacher, ? sir mark me present .?
  • Indirect: the student respectfully requested the teacher to mark him present.

(4) we change good morning,good evening in to the word like he greeted him.

(5) : some words in reported speech like yes,no,not at all,certainly, never are changed according to sense .
Like - He replied in positive,he replied in negative
  • Direct : Ram asked him will you go Delhi?? he replied ?No?
  • Indirect : Ram asked him whether he would go to Delhi . He replied in the negative .

(6) : When we introduce any person or things in reported speech , the adjective is removed and other addressing words are used in reporting verb like
  • Direct : the speaker said ?ladies and gentleman it is my proud privilege to talk to you this afternoon.?
  • Indirect: Addressing the audience he said that it was his proud privilege to talk to them afternoon.
  • Direct: The teacher said, ?Where are you going john??
  • Indirect: Calling john the teacher asked him where he was going.

 "Prayed" in the place of word like ?May?

  • Direct: he said, ?May you live long.?
  • Indirect: he prayed for long life to him.
