The Gerund



The form of the verbs which ends with ?ing? and has the force of noun and verb, like 
walking, reading, running, writing, driving are gerunds?.

Function of Gerund 

  • As the subject of verb
  • Reading is a good habit.
  • Walking is beneficial for health.


As the object of verb

  • Stop crying.
  • I hate telling lies.
  • She loves dancing.
  • He likes sitting idle.

As a case in apposition 

  • It is no use running after shadows.
  • It was useful talking to him.
  • It is foolish of me crying for you.
  • It is your mistake trusting him blindly.

As the object of Preposition

  • He is fond of singing.
  • She believes in work hard.
  • I am against fighting.

As the complement of verb

  • What I hate is telling lies.
  • Her habit is reading till late in the night.
  • Her weakness is sleeping.

Rules how to use gerund 
Noun and pronoun should be used always in possessive case like 

  • She was sorry for her being late.
  • She was happy for her reaching there In time.


But if there is a lifeless thing then there will not be any possessive case like
  • There is a chance of the milk turning sour.
  • There is harm of reading till late in the night.

Also plural pronoun which has ?s? in the end of demonstrative pronoun will not be changed , like
 There are some verbs that come with only gerund, like 
Avoid, feel, mind, consider, give up, go on,  it is no good, it is no good, it is no use, can?t help, , excuse, miss,  like 

  • She avoids going there.
  • I can?t help rejecting your application.
  • We missed to see you dancing.
  • Would you mind leaving him alone? 

Compound noun also consider as gerund..Like 

frying pan, walking stick, Writing table, inking pad 
Past participle that come before ?having? or ?being? are also called past participle. like 
  • We here of his, having won a reward.
  • The child is afraid of being punished.
